~~~End of the book~~~
May 15, 2007
well when we first started reading the book, i have to admit, it was pretty boring. however, when i started reading farther it got a little more interesting especially when it came to the trial of Tom Robinson. i think that was the best part of the book. during this part of the book, prejudice went way beyond it’s limits. i mean come on just because he’s black doesn’t give the jury the right to say he’s gulty. “i shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury: ‘ Guilty….guilty….guilty….guilty…..” well when this part of the trial came, it was a big heartbraker. i mean throught the whole trial the evidence was proving him innocent and when the verdict came back Atticus left immediatley because he knew it was wrong and he didn’t believe it. “Atticus took his coat off the back of his chair and pulled it over his shoulder.”  he knew as a grown man thought that now black man would ever win over a white man. “Atticus was right. one time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley’s porch was enough. As i made my way home, i thought jem and i would get grown but there wasn’t much else left for us to learn, except possibly algebra”. this would by far have to be one of the truest statement still today. many people dont reallize what it’s like for other people until they are forced to walk in their schools. and Scout, man had she grown up since the beginning because if Atticus would have said this to her when the story started, she wouldn’t have understood.  in the beginning of the book, i think all the characters had some things that they definitly could have improved. by the end of the book they all did. especially the Scout and Jem. Scout has made a great deal of improvement but i think Jem has REALLY grown up in this book. With his dad’d trial and everything he has really got a good understanding on prejudice especially. He now understands that thing should be around and things shouldn’t be around but that there’s nothing you can really do about it. ” I know it’s not right, but i can’t figure out what’s wrong — maybe rape shouldn’t be a capital offense…” He is confused because the way the case is going he doesn’t really know whats right and whats wrong. This book is a great example of what today is like, i mean the same exact things happen in todays world. Maybe they are a little different but for the most part, prejudice and racism are still very present in society.
About The Trial
May 4, 2007
well first of all, i think this trial could have very well been rigged. i dont quite understand why even the white people of the town are mad at Atticus and his family. i mean first of all, he didn’t just go out to the court and say i want to defend Tom Robinson, the black guy. i mean he was appointed this case by Judge Taylor. i think he knows way better than to take a case like this even thought there is nothing wrong with it other than the fact that this is still back in the day when black people were greatly hated and were the minority. At the trial, they called Mr. Heck Tate to the stand and questioned him. In the questioning, Atticus asked him to describe Mayella’s injuries to the jury and he did. Then, Atticus asked Mr. Heck Tate if anyone had called a doctor. “Did you call a doctor, Sheriff? Did anybody call a doctor?” “No sir,” said Mr. Heck Tate. this is a good part in the case because Atticus is proving that either it coudn’t have happened or it must not have been very bad at all if they didn’t call a doctor. when the case finally came to nearly the end, “Judge Taylor was polling to jury: “Guilty….Guilty….Guilty….Guilty….”. this was a big shock to not only Jem, Scout ,and Dill but also sort of to Atticus becuase even thought he knew he was doing good, in the back of his mind he knew that no black man could ever win against a white man. “In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s , the white man always wins. They’re ugly, but those are the facts of life.” this is true, even in todays world. people think that prejudice has gone away, but people need to wake up and smell the coffee, it will never end. As long as we have people of color other then white or what ever color you want to call it, prejudice will always exist.  i think the cases where it’s a black mans words against a white mans words, unless the black man has unsubstantial evidence to support his claim, he will lose even in todays courts.
How Did I Do It?
May 4, 2007
well throughtout these chapters, i knew the assignment so i just marked the important passages as i read. i sort of had to mark a passage that i thought was important and then maybe go back after i read the chapter and change my passage. i read the chapter and figure out what it was mostly about and then i go back and find a passage that shows exactly that. well when i read for other classes, we dont have to do assignments for each chapter so it is easier for me to just read it and somtimes i understand it better. as i read to kill a mockingbird, it was confusing at some points so the blogging assignments really helped me break it down and understand it and sometimes i wish i would have been able to do this for other book i’ve read but at the same time i just wish i could have been able to read the book and not worry about assignments.
my opinion
well first of all, i think blogging about the To Kill Mockingbird is pretty cool because it is pretty much just what we think about the book and not so much “right” answers. i like it when we get to “freely” blog because i think i have alot more to say. its not so hard for me to write when i can just write. i think that we probably would have all had alot more to say if the book we were reading was a little more interesting and not so drawn out but i think that bloggin over this book was defenitly the funnest. i think that we could have had a little more free style writing and it wouldn’t have been boring . well also if we would have been bloging about more interesting topics, we wouldn’t have had so much trouble.
