well when we first started reading the book, i have to admit, it was pretty boring. however, when i started reading farther it got a little more interesting especially when it came to the trial of Tom Robinson. i think that was the best part of the book. during this part of the book, prejudice went way beyond it’s limits. i mean come on just because he’s black doesn’t give the jury the right to say he’s gulty. “i shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury: ‘ Guilty….guilty….guilty….guilty…..” well when this part of the trial came, it was a big heartbraker. i mean throught the whole trial the evidence was proving him innocent and when the verdict came back Atticus left immediatley because he knew it was wrong and he didn’t believe it. “Atticus took his coat off the back of his chair and pulled it over his shoulder.” he knew as a grown man thought that now black man would ever win over a white man. “Atticus was right. one time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley’s porch was enough. As i made my way home, i thought jem and i would get grown but there wasn’t much else left for us to learn, except possibly algebra”. this would by far have to be one of the truest statement still today. many people dont reallize what it’s like for other people until they are forced to walk in their schools. and Scout, man had she grown up since the beginning because if Atticus would have said this to her when the story started, she wouldn’t have understood. in the beginning of the book, i think all the characters had some things that they definitly could have improved. by the end of the book they all did. especially the Scout and Jem. Scout has made a great deal of improvement but i think Jem has REALLY grown up in this book. With his dad’d trial and everything he has really got a good understanding on prejudice especially. He now understands that thing should be around and things shouldn’t be around but that there’s nothing you can really do about it. ” I know it’s not right, but i can’t figure out what’s wrong — maybe rape shouldn’t be a capital offense…” He is confused because the way the case is going he doesn’t really know whats right and whats wrong. This book is a great example of what today is like, i mean the same exact things happen in todays world. Maybe they are a little different but for the most part, prejudice and racism are still very present in society.

May 15, 2007About The Trial
May 4, 2007well first of all, i think this trial could have very well been rigged. i dont quite understand why even the white people of the town are mad at Atticus and his family. i mean first of all, he didn’t just go out to the court and say i want to defend Tom Robinson, the black guy. i mean he was appointed this case by Judge Taylor. i think he knows way better than to take a case like this even thought there is nothing wrong with it other than the fact that this is still back in the day when black people were greatly hated and were the minority. At the trial, they called Mr. Heck Tate to the stand and questioned him. In the questioning, Atticus asked him to describe Mayella’s injuries to the jury and he did. Then, Atticus asked Mr. Heck Tate if anyone had called a doctor. “Did you call a doctor, Sheriff? Did anybody call a doctor?” “No sir,” said Mr. Heck Tate. this is a good part in the case because Atticus is proving that either it coudn’t have happened or it must not have been very bad at all if they didn’t call a doctor. when the case finally came to nearly the end, “Judge Taylor was polling to jury: “Guilty….Guilty….Guilty….Guilty….”. this was a big shock to not only Jem, Scout ,and Dill but also sort of to Atticus becuase even thought he knew he was doing good, in the back of his mind he knew that no black man could ever win against a white man. “In our courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s , the white man always wins. They’re ugly, but those are the facts of life.” this is true, even in todays world. people think that prejudice has gone away, but people need to wake up and smell the coffee, it will never end. As long as we have people of color other then white or what ever color you want to call it, prejudice will always exist. i think the cases where it’s a black mans words against a white mans words, unless the black man has unsubstantial evidence to support his claim, he will lose even in todays courts.
my opinion
May 2, 2007well first of all, i think blogging about the To Kill Mockingbird is pretty cool because it is pretty much just what we think about the book and not so much “right” answers. i like it when we get to “freely” blog because i think i have alot more to say. its not so hard for me to write when i can just write. i think that we probably would have all had alot more to say if the book we were reading was a little more interesting and not so drawn out but i think that bloggin over this book was defenitly the funnest. i think that we could have had a little more free style writing and it wouldn’t have been boring . well also if we would have been bloging about more interesting topics, we wouldn’t have had so much trouble.
Thoughts on Ending
December 8, 2006thats a pretty crazy but sad ending. i think somehow george and the other guys had a comspiracy going and they had planned the whole seen with curley’s wife going to see lennie and all that. that was kind of messed up especially since lennie and george were like best friends. why would george do that unless the other guys put him up to it. i mean he sort of seemed like he did get a little annoyed with lennie sometimes but he never seemed annoyed enough to kill him.
pick a line, any line!
November 20, 2006But man is not made for defeat, a man can be destroyed but not defeated. i like this passage because it shows how he has not let the fish get the better side of him. he is basically saying that he will not let this fish defeat him unless the fish is defeated as well. I think the old man is always contradicting himself because that is the only way he can keep himself going. otherwise, i think he would not have had the will nor the energy to defeat the fish and make it home. the old man keeps thinking it was a dream because the sharks keep eating the fish that he has worked so hard to kill. they keep taking his pride and there is nothing he can do about it. he knew if it were a dream, the fish would still be there and he would have plenty to sell to the people of the town. however it was not a dream, the sharks had taken everything off the fish.
Hope N’ Encouragement
October 30, 2006i think that this book is about hope and encouragement because the old man wanted the fish and that was his dream so thats what he went after. the old man had great hope that he would catch the fish because otherwise, i don’t think he would let the fish pull him out to sea that far. i don’t really understand what he meant about the lions at the end of the book but thats all good, i ‘ll figure it later. the old man probably would not have been able to keep going if he didn’t contradict himself throughout the whole ride. he had a very eventful ride but still held on and didn’t let the fish, in the beginning, or the sharks, in the end, get the better side of him. i think that the old man had great hope that he would catch this fish he had been dreaming of all his life. he knew from the beginning that he was going out to catch the biggest fish he could haul and thats exactly what he did. he did not let his weekness nor his hunger get to him and he kept on fighting. hemmingway wanted to finish his dream. he wanted to show the boy that he was not worthless because of the fact that the boy looked to him like a mentour.
What is Hemmingway Like?
October 30, 2006Edward Hemmingway was very dedicated to his writing. althought he is not very descriptive in his writing either. he doesn’t really paint that picture in your head the way i would like him to. i mean i understood the story but after reading parts of moby dick, i realized i probably would have understood more of hemmingways if he was more descriptive. the positive thing about his writing thought is that he is not afraid to write what he feel. he writes what he feels and what he sees not caring what anyone else thinks about it. hemingway grew up in the afflucant chicago suburb of Oak Park. he was the son of a physician father and a musically inclined mother. hemingway was a great writer in childhood and throughout highschool however his writing was not legable so he recieved poor grades for his work. his family spent alot of their time at a cottagfe they owned. this was where hemingways father taught him to fish. and finally on july 2, 1961 hemingway killed himself at his home in idaho.
So much to write!
October 4, 2006Recently, i have noticed that the old man is beginning to become somewhat scared. He is really wondering where the fish is headed and why the fish isn’t going with the flow of the current. Instead, the fish is somewhat pulling the boat against the current into the east. The old man has looked back and realized that they are no where near land becuase he can not see it. The old man is really getting lonelly and he is beginning to talk to the annonymous animal that is pulling him out to shore and the bird that landed on his boat sail. He really wishes that he had the boy with him so he would have someone to talk to and so he would have some help with the lines. He would probably like some help to hold the lines while he could try to clean up his cuts on his face and his hand. He has realized that this fish might never stop and that maybe he should eat something for the energy. He has some tuna that he said he wanted to eat before it got bad. He is telling himself that even if he is not hungry by morning he should still eat the tuna.
