well throughtout these chapters, i knew the assignment so i just marked the important passages as i read. i sort of had to mark a passage that i thought was important and then maybe go back after i read the chapter and change my passage. i read the chapter and figure out what it was mostly about and then i go back and find a passage that shows exactly that. well when i read for other classes, we dont have to do assignments for each chapter so it is easier for me to just read it and somtimes i understand it better. as i read to kill a mockingbird, it was confusing at some points so the blogging assignments really helped me break it down and understand it and sometimes i wish i would have been able to do this for other book i’ve read but at the same time i just wish i could have been able to read the book and not worry about assignments.

How Did I Do It?
May 4, 2007Themes and Stuff
April 30, 2007throughout this book, i have noticed alot of different themes. i have noticed prejudice, hatred, lonesomeness, and betrayel. Prejudice is present quite a bit in the story. i mean yeah its a big deal and all but you wouldn’t think it would be so bad back then like it is in todays world. i mean everywhere i go, somebody is getting discriminated against whether they know it or not. Also Hatred is a big problem in this story. okay well yeah people hate people every day but they way its used in this story is just amazing. well i mean just because they childrens father is defending a black man on trial, doesn’t give the people of that town to show hatred and prejudice to the kids. why should they be at blame when they had no say in their fathers decision to defend a black man. and i mean if anybody should be shown any hatred it should be the people that are trying to lock up Tom Robinson not Atticus and his family. Another problem in the way so many people in the town and so lonesome. and how the other people in the town notice but dont care just because those people are ‘different’. Everyday we all see these things i mean just going to school or to the store these things happen. there are so many people who hate others just because they are poor or because they arent popular, well you know what were all the same just in our own ways, and its not someones fault it they aren’t wealthy but alteast they still have pride.
Prejudice And Me
April 10, 2007Okay well as we all grow up, we are taught racism and that people are different colors. we dont really understand what it actually is until we get into about middle school. for example, when i grew up in California and prejudice and racism were very common things. i used to play with all the kids in the neighborhood and didn’t care what color they were or if they were rich or not. but some of the other kids wouldn’t play with me and the others because the others were black or maybe they’re mom wouldn’t let them because they weren’t rich. as i got older, i started to realize why people were so racist and prejudice toward the minority kids and sometimes even towards their parents, just like whats happening in To Kill a Mockingbird. i think that now Jem is getting older and more defensive toward what people say about his dad and especially to him and his sister. i would have done the same thing as Jem and stood up for what was right. i dont think that people should be degraded upon just because they are wealthy or are African American or Native or Chinese or what ever their race happens to be. i think we need to do exactly what the Declaration of Independance says, “All Men Are Created Equal.”
Thoughts on Chapters 9 – 11
March 29, 2007well i think that some of the questions were really good questions. the one about Scout and Francise fighting all the timeis true. i mean they are counsins and they shouldn’t fight all the time, especially about family members. i think that Atticus wanted Scout to hear the conversation because it would help her understand the situation much better. when scout was listening and Uncle Jack didn’t mention the real reason they faught it also think it meant alot to Scout. even thought she was mad at him for what he did earlier, i think she gained some respect because of his thoughtfulness. i think that atticus did always let his kids win because he felt insecure about himself in some way. i think that he wanted them to grow up better than he thought he had and he wanted them to have the courage to do anything and know that they can beat the best if they try hard enough. Mrs. Dubose’s fits were because she was a Morphine addict and she needed it to function normally, she had lived along time on it so she became used to it and soon it became a necessity. it think that Jem took the present like a bad thing because he had gotten close to her while reading to her and he wasn’t reading to face it that she had died in peace.
Jems Journal
March 27, 2007The first major thing is when Scout came home and was chewing gum that she had found in the tree hole. Jem flipped out and told her to spit it out and never touch anything she found in there because it was the Radleys tree and they had poisoned it. another thing is probably when Scout, Dill, and Jem decided to take a note over and put it in the window seal and hope that Boo Radley would get it and answer it. i think jem was really scared when he did it because he he was chosen to actually go up to the house and put the note in the window seal. i think that it would be pretty scary too. i mean and when they ran away because they heard gun shots and Scout and Dill got away but Jem didn’t because his pants got stuck on the fence. he was probably relieved when Scout and Dill came to rescue him. however, that night when he went back to get his pants and came back home to find them sewed an folded that probably scared him pretty good. Finally when Miss Maudies house burns down and Atticus wakes the kids in the middle of the night to get them out of the house Jem and Scout had no idea what was going on so they were probablly really scared and didn’t know what to do. i mean all Jem did was stand with his sister Scout and ask his dad if he wanted him to get the stuff out of their house. and when they found out that Boo Radley put a blanket over Scout it probably gave them the chills.
Symbols and Thoughts
March 27, 2007i think that the Radley house and the Dubose house are great potential symbols. i think that these house are way more than just houses. for one, they are the childrens physical limit but also their mental limit. the kids know that they are not allowed past those house but they especially know not to mess with the Radley house. And because they are not sapposed to mess with it, i think they do it to see what their limits are. the Dubose house is also a great limit because the children think she is weird but they still talk to her because of respect. the kids dont really think about her house as much as they think about the Radley house. why is Miss Dubose house so important i mean what does she do?
